Jim Geerstma

History Trip Facilitator

Jim Geertsma grew up on a dairy farm in western Washington state. He decided early on to “leave the cows behind” and become a teacher. After receiving his Elementary Education degree from Dordt College (where he met his wife Belinda), Jim began a 37 year career in the classroom, teaching in California, Washington, Iowa, and Michigan. For the most part he taught in self-contained classrooms, teaching all the subject areas. One of his career highlights includes having the privilege of teaching each of his four children in the middle elementary grades. As any teacher knows, certain subject areas arouse your passions and release your endorphins more than others, and Jim found this to be true when he taught about numbers (math) and about areas of social injustice (history).

Jim and his wife Belinda love to camp in their teardrop trailer in the countryside in close proximity to large metropolitan areas. This affords them the peace provided by rural America combined with the learning opportunities from America’s best museums found in our cities.  Now retired, Jim spends his time as a soccer official, a basketball announcer, an active grandpa, and a volunteer for United Way.
